A Legacy of Excellence: How Gekkeikan Shaped the Modern Spirit of Kyoto

If there is one sake brewery everyone in the world knows, it’s Gekkeikan Sake Co., Ltd. It is a towering institution in the world of sake, blending nearly four centuries of heritage with a relentless spirit of innovation. Founded in 1637 in the historic Fushimi district of Kyoto, this family-led brewery has grown from a small local shop into a global pioneer. Under the stewardship of the Okura family, now in its 14th generation, Gekkeikan continues to champion the values of quality and creativity, crafting refined sake that respects the rich traditions of Japan’s ancient capital while constantly evolving to satisfy modern palates.

Embracing a symbol of victory

In 1637, founder Jiemon Okura opened a small brewery called Kasagiya in Fushimi, a town south of Kyoto celebrated for its pristine water. For the first two and a half centuries, it remained a modest local business, producing only a few hundred “koku” — around 10,000 to 20,000 gallons — of sake annually. A turning point came in 1905 when the 11th successor, Tsunekichi Okura, registered the brand name Gekkeikan, meaning “laurel wreath.” Representing a symbol of victory and glory, this bold name reflected his ambition to make Fushimi sake the absolute best in Japan.

The birth of scientific sake brewing

During the early 20th century, Tsunekichi revolutionized the industry by introducing rigorous scientific methods to a process that was previously driven purely by intuition. In 1909, he established the Okura Sake Brewing Research Institute, the first scientific laboratory dedicated to sake production. This led to a monumental breakthrough in 1911: the introduction of bottled sake with no added preservatives, a stark contrast to the standard wooden casks of the era. They also launched a unique small bottle featuring a built-in cup for train travelers, instantly spreading Gekkeikan’s reputation across the entire nation.

Revolutionizing the craft with modern technology

Gekkeikan’s relentless pursuit of technical innovation continued to reshape the entire sake landscape throughout the 20th century. In 1927, the company built Japan's very first ferroconcrete brewery equipped with specialized cooling systems, taking the first step away from traditional winter-only production. This pioneering work culminated in 1961 with the launch of a revolutionary year-round brewing facility. By breaking free from seasonal constraints, Gekkeikan provided stable, continuous employment for their team while maintaining flawless quality control, proving that ancient craftsmanship could be beautifully harmonized with cutting-edge engineering.

Cataloging a history of excellence

Boasting nearly 400 years of business, Gekkeikan is just as much part of the history of Japan as it is the history of sake making. Visitors in Kyoto can stop in at the Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum, housed in a converted sake brewery originally built in 1909. Their historical sake brewing tools and containers are designated Tangible Folk Cultural Properties of Kyoto. Gekkeikan sake bottles and vessels from across the centuries are also kept there, as well as archival materials from imperial enthronement ceremonies for which Gekkeikan has provided sake.

Becoming a global powerhouse

In 1989, Gekkeikan launched a state-of-the-art sake brewery in Folsom, California. Gekkeikan Sake (USA), Inc. uses local rice and pristine water to craft approachable brews for their American audience. This stateside production facility gives the Kyoto-born brand the ability to sell fresher, more affordable sake outside Japan. Gekkeikan’s global popularity has surged thanks in no small part to their U.S. brewery’s success. They’ve become a reliable, staple brand that every sake drinker knows.

Why this matters

We hold a profound respect for Gekkeikan because they proved that massive scale and deep history do not restrict creativity. By stepping away from rigid habits to embrace modern science, they helped preserve a traditional art form and successfully brought premium sake to the global stage. Choosing their sake means drinking a living heritage that has evolved from the samurai era to the modern dining table, offering a beautifully balanced, reliable experience backed by nearly four centuries of dedicated family craftsmanship.
